Over the last 6 years we have always purchased Canon Elf/Powerhshots for around 0 to 0
I say always because typically they have not lasted for much than one year. Admittedly, it probably comes down to user abuse, not necessarily camera quality.

Regardless, I decided to look for a more rugged camera and was prepared to pay a little more if it meant not replacing it within 12 months. On a friends recommendation I purchased the Pentax Optio W90.

So far, so good. It really is very user friendly (a must for my limited brain power). Preset modes are great. HD video is fantastic. It does work well in the rain and under water.
I have kids so we are already having fun with it, and getting great shots that we would have not taken previously.

I am not a camera expert, but for quick, easy, versatile shots that turn out well to the eye of the average snapper I can recommend the Pentax W90, without hesitation.

The only question I am waiting to have answered in 10 months time is - will it last me for more than a year without breaking?

Bad rating due to some sort of design flaw in the water as mentioned by many.

The camera is packed full of options, takes great pictures in and out of the water. I really liked the camera until the first time it was used in water. The camera took excellent pictures while snorkeling, however after less than an hour in the water the camera ceased to function. The camera took a few pictures on its own then shut-off never to come on again. Let it dry for four days to no avail. Had to return the camera to Amazon. Again, a great feature set, great pictures, just not actually waterproof.

I have just taken my new pentax optio W90 to the Galapagos islands. I was able to take some fabulous photos above and below water, plus films above and below water, also wonderful panoramic shots and great macro shots using it. I was really impressed by the camera, as was our Galapagos guide, and the people on our boat. Ultimately, my camera made a one way trip and I've left it in the Galapagos Islands with our guide, who was extremeley pleased to receive it. Needless to say I have just ordered myself a replacement which I'm eagerly awaiting!

I have owned the camera for a couple of months and the pictures have been fairly good. I purchased due to the rugged and water proof advertisement. I have taken the camera hiking and it has held up well but it was not dropped. Recently i went on vacation, the camera stopped working even before it was put in the water. It would power on and I could take three or four pictures and then it would power itself off. I could wait a few minutes and it would power back on and then power back off. It was not the battery - it was fully charged and changed to a new one. Then I took a few pictures in the pool and the camera went off and never came back on. I called customer service... Randy gave me attitude when I complained about it taking 4 weeks to repair my two month old camera. I am not sure why he should be upset...

For all those people considering buying this camera and you are saying I won't get one of the ones that will stop working, do not think that... I thought that and now Pentax has my camera and who knows when it will be returned. I understand the camera is a great concept but it just does not work as advertised and I wish I could return it for a full refund... but instead I am waiting in the never ending repair line.
