Digital Camera

A camera that takes video or still photographs or both is called a Digital Camera. The Digital Camera is done through recording by way of an electronic image sensor. What Is The Best Digital Camera Brand?

If ever there was a controversial question amongst the hordes of digital camera enthusiasts, it has to be "What is the best digital camera brand?". Sometimes referred to as "What is the best brand of digital camera to buy?", but not to be confused with "What is the best camera to buy?". Because everyone knows that regular (film) cameras are far superior to digital cameras. Hang on a sec, or was that the other way around? Who can keep track these days? Now before I digress too far from the topic, lets take a look at that age old battle, and see if we can determine which brand is best.

First things first, in the spirit of full disclosure, I need to declare that I do in fact own several cameras. They represent a variety of brands. I have two Canons, a Fuji, and a Kodak. I must confess, that I am somewhat partial to Canon, but I'll try not to let that cloud any editorial comments I may subsequently make.

If digital camera sales were any indication of what the best brand was, then according to Amazon.com Canon would be a clear winner. As I write this, Canon manufactures 18 of the top 25 bestselling cameras on their best seller list. In addition, Canon holds 9 of the top 10 spots, with the top 3 being the PowerShot A570 IS, the PowerShot SD1000 Digital Elph, and the PowerShot SD850. Sharing the top 11 spots with Canon are 2 of the Pure Video manufactured Flip Video cameras. Nikon has 2 cameras in the top 25 including the Nikon D40, and the Nikon D300. Panasonic sneaks in with a couple of their Lumix models, specifically the DMC-TZ3K and the DMC-TZ3A. And finishing in a strong 25th spot, that old stalwart Kodak with the Easyshare Z812IS.

Of course being popular, or the best seller does not the best brand make. It simply means you have the best salesmanship. In that world, Canon seems to be having the most success. How exactly would we determine the best brand? Best service, best design, best features, best customer support, best images, and best user experience are all valid traits. Perhaps a critical / scientific /empirical examination of all cameras models by manufacturer would be in order. Let's see if we can aggregate a lot of the work already done by a couple of camera review sites who take the above traits into consideration.

A perusal of one top camera review site under their 5 star category, show 39 Canon cameras, 18 Sony cameras, 17 Nikon cameras, 6 Fuji cameras, 5 Olympus cameras, 5 Panasonic cameras, 3 Pentax cameras, and 1 Konica camera. A second camera review site under their top 103 cameras showed 46 Canon cameras, 21 Sony cameras, 20 Nikon cameras, 5 Pentax cameras, 3 Fuji cameras, 2 Samsung cameras, 2 Panasonic cameras, 2 Kodak cameras, 1 Konica camera, and 1 Casio camera. If you total all that up, the top 3 end up being Canon with 85, Sony a distant second with 39, and Nikon a very close third with 37. Everyone else had less than 10 top rated cameras.

Interesting huh? Canon seems to be dominating sales, and wowing the critics. That's a pretty strong one-two punch. The only reasonable conclusion here, is that Canon is the best overall brand out there. Of course I would never recommend anyone buy a camera based solely on brand. What I do suggest, is to do your homework by researching some good cameras. Once you've got your short list, and with everything else being equal, maybe then you should pick the Canon.

Canon WP-DC500 Waterproof Case for S330 Digital Camera Review

If you'd like to use your Canon S330 for underwater photography, then you need this waterproof housing from Canon that's made specifically to fit the Digital Elph S330 camera.

The case offers access to all of the camera's controls and allows you to take underwater photos down to 100 feet (compared to the 20-30 feet most disposable "underwater" cameras offer).

I used this case with my S330 in the Bahamas and took several good photos. However, do be aware that the case doesn't provide for an external strobe of any sort (not that the S330 works with one anyway), which means you'll need good lighting to get decent photos.

I also do recommend very strictly following its instructions for use to prevent leaks, including testing out in a bucket or shallow water and immediately rinsing / cleaning the case after a swim or dive. I had no problems whatsoever after using the case on several dives in 20-30 feet of water.

This waterproof case works great! I took it to the Bahamas with me and took pictures of some fish while snorkeling. Not a single leak and the pictures came out great. Due to temperature changes, sometimes the pics come out a bit hazy, but utilizing the anti-fog helps. I recommend this if you enjoy a lot of water sports.

I purchased the WP-DC700 underwater case for my A70 and followed the directions exactly, oiling the gasket and cleaning it after each use. It leaked and ruined my month old camera. Customer service was rude, blamed me and then tried to bargain with me to fix it for 0 instead of the 0 that they initially requested. The underwater case has a 7 DAY WARANTY and the camera is not covered for water damage. My father had a similar problem with his 00 Nikon digital which just stopped working for no aparent reason, they claimed it was water damage and tried to bargain with him to buy a rebuilt one for 0. So beware of bad customer service. Canon's customer service has all bad unreasolved reviews at the Better business Bureau

Kayaking, mountain biking, dirt bikes, and skeet and trap shooting are some of the activities that I've already taken this camera along on. You'll want to take the battery advice from the manufacturer, but the camera performs tremendously well.

If I had one wish, it would be that there is some way to get more sound through the polycarbonate case that protects the camera.

GoPro Hero Wide - Good Cam. Could use some improvements - F. Esteves - Sunnyvale, CA USA
Everyone's comments regarding the Hero Wide is fairly correct. A few things that I want to add with emphasis on its video recording capabilities.

The Hero utilizes the FAT32 file naming system. Therefore, despite putting an 8GB SD card, the single largest file you can create will be 4GB which translates to roughly a slightly less than 2 hour maximum recording time (it seems to end around 1:40 hours).

Also, your two battery choices are NiMH (reusable) or Lithium (one time use). Since your maximum recording time is a little under 2 hours, a set of fully charged NiMH will handle this and much cheaper than Lithium. Lithium batteries will last closer to 3 hours, but with a 2 hour maximum recording time per file, it seems pointless. Please get at least 1000 MaH capacity NiMH batteries or higher. Anything less and you'll get shorter battery life like some others have experienced.

If GoPro utilized the NTFS file system, then file recording could take full advantage of the maximum 8GB SD Card. (I believe the HD version does this, using the MP4 file format for video recording).

Also, once the maximum file size is reached, you'll need to hit record again to start recording. If you don't, the camera will automatically shut off. Also, if you're recording that long, it's probably not worth starting a 2nd file since your NiMH will be nearly depleted anyhow.

It's a fairly usable video cam and I prefer this over the newer HD version because most of the videos I make are sent over the web, so for the large amount of money to get to HD, I'm not gaining much in video quality if being sent over the computer.

The HD Hero utilized a Lithium rechargeable battery which is great, but its a specialized battery which means once its done, the camera is done. The Hero Wide cam can keep on going with another set of NiMH AAA batteries.

I ordered this camera as an upgrade from a "Flip" camera to record my autocross runs. I was excited about the versatility of the mounting hardware, but when it came time to race I had a difficult time figuring out how to mount it inside my windshield. Truthfully, my little Flip camera held in a cellphone mount recorded better video than this camera. I love the "wide angle" lens, but it sacrifices a LOT of video quality to record WAY too wide. I assume the HD version, which costs twice as much, would provide the better quality, but I would prefer less of the "fisheye" effect.

I also had difficulty getting it to record. When I only get six attempts to race the course, it is INCREDIBLY FRUSTRATING to find (after getting home, because there is not playback screen) that three times the camera started and then stopped after only a couple of seconds, but I didn't know that at the time. Luckily my Flip recorded every run.

And I agree with other complaints that the camera should be able to be mounted without the waterproof housing. I had a problem with one of the mounting hardware screws not seating into the nut on the bracket. It left me so concerned about the camera falling off that I didn't mount it outside the car.

To sum it up: Video quality did not impress me. Inability to know that the camera has stopped recording is a big disappointment. Mounting hardware is difficult to set up.

I would NOT recommend this to someone else.

My husband bought this camera for me because I am prone to breaking cameras so when we saw Whoopi Goldberg toss the camera across the stage on The View and dunk it in water he knew it was the right camera for me. We live in Hawaii and do a lot of outdoor activities including kayaking, hiking, cliff diving, etc so we needed a camera that could stand up to salt water and sand but still take quality photos and video. I had the camera for almost a full year when I noticed some condensation in the LCD view screen and lens screen so I sent the camera in for repair and was pleasantly surprised to discover that Panasonic sent me the newest model of the camera. The newest model (2010) comes with a rubber camera skin, USB cord, video cords and upgraded software. My only con is that I cannot find anywhere whether or not the LCD view screen is scratch proof which would seem like an obvious feature since this camera is advertised as a rugged camera. I highly recommend this camera for anyone accident prone with camera's and for anyone who enjoys doing outdoor activities.

Over the last 6 years we have always purchased Canon Elf/Powerhshots for around 0 to 0
I say always because typically they have not lasted for much than one year. Admittedly, it probably comes down to user abuse, not necessarily camera quality.

Regardless, I decided to look for a more rugged camera and was prepared to pay a little more if it meant not replacing it within 12 months. On a friends recommendation I purchased the Pentax Optio W90.

So far, so good. It really is very user friendly (a must for my limited brain power). Preset modes are great. HD video is fantastic. It does work well in the rain and under water.
I have kids so we are already having fun with it, and getting great shots that we would have not taken previously.

I am not a camera expert, but for quick, easy, versatile shots that turn out well to the eye of the average snapper I can recommend the Pentax W90, without hesitation.

The only question I am waiting to have answered in 10 months time is - will it last me for more than a year without breaking?

Bad rating due to some sort of design flaw in the water as mentioned by many.

The camera is packed full of options, takes great pictures in and out of the water. I really liked the camera until the first time it was used in water. The camera took excellent pictures while snorkeling, however after less than an hour in the water the camera ceased to function. The camera took a few pictures on its own then shut-off never to come on again. Let it dry for four days to no avail. Had to return the camera to Amazon. Again, a great feature set, great pictures, just not actually waterproof.

I have just taken my new pentax optio W90 to the Galapagos islands. I was able to take some fabulous photos above and below water, plus films above and below water, also wonderful panoramic shots and great macro shots using it. I was really impressed by the camera, as was our Galapagos guide, and the people on our boat. Ultimately, my camera made a one way trip and I've left it in the Galapagos Islands with our guide, who was extremeley pleased to receive it. Needless to say I have just ordered myself a replacement which I'm eagerly awaiting!



I wanted this camera to work as advertised but it did not. - Steve C. Rickard - Lebanon
I have owned the camera for a couple of months and the pictures have been fairly good. I purchased due to the rugged and water proof advertisement. I have taken the camera hiking and it has held up well but it was not dropped. Recently i went on vacation, the camera stopped working even before it was put in the water. It would power on and I could take three or four pictures and then it would power itself off. I could wait a few minutes and it would power back on and then power back off. It was not the battery - it was fully charged and changed to a new one. Then I took a few pictures in the pool and the camera went off and never came back on. I called customer service... Randy gave me attitude when I complained about it taking 4 weeks to repair my two month old camera. I am not sure why he should be upset...

For all those people considering buying this camera and you are saying I won't get one of the ones that will stop working, do not think that... I thought that and now Pentax has my camera and who knows when it will be returned. I understand the camera is a great concept but it just does not work as advertised and I wish I could return it for a full refund... but instead I am waiting in the never ending repair line.
